Ben goes on to become the Chief of Pediatric Neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins, where he leads surgical teams through challenging and contentious procedures such as separating conjoined twins who share sections of their heads. It was a watershed moment in Ben’s medical career when he was accepted into this world-class teaching hospital. Ben learns of some news that could damage the University of Michigan’s neurosurgery program, so he applies to Johns Hopkins for the remainder of his medical school career. Ben’s first ambition was to become a missionary doctor or a psychiatrist, but he has developed an interest in neurosurgery. Interns and residents begin to rely on Ben for assistance with their responsibilities. Ben has known since he was a child that he wants to be a doctor, and there has never been any doubt about it. Ben eventually decides on Yale University, where he is awarded a full academic scholarship. Ben is being recruited by the greatest colleges in the country because of his outstanding academic achievements and high SAT scores. Ben perseveres despite racial prejudice and ridicule from certain students and even teachers, always hearing his mother’s words in the back of his mind. When Ben is up against insurmountable odds, he prays to God and always manages to overcome them.īen begins to believe in himself and works hard in junior and senior high school to become one of the finest students in the class. She was never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever Ben’s strong Christian convictions, which he has maintained throughout his life, were inspired by Sonya. Sonya teaches her sons that they can be anything they desire and that reading will help them achieve their goals throughout their childhood. She maintains her focus on the important things in life, emphasizing the importance of education and accomplishment. For a short time, he develops an attitude, and his grades begin to drop, but Sonya does not give up on him or on her kids’ dreams. To fit in with the other youngsters, Ben succumbs to peer pressure and demands “cool” clothing. The sons are unhappy with the arrangement, but they love and respect their mother and follow her rules.īen and Curtis faced numerous temptations and hardships that may have led them wrong. The boys are only permitted to watch two hours of television per week and are required to read two books per week and submit book reports to Sonya. Sonya is a task master despite working three jobs at once. Despite her third-grade education, Sonya was a wise woman who understood the importance of education for her kids’ escape from the ghetto and successful life. Sonya married at the age of 13 to get away from her difficult life. Sonya had 23 siblings and was born in a small town in Tennessee. Sonya, Ben’s mother, is a driving force in her sons’ lives. Ben’s heart is devastated when his father abandons his family when he is nine years old, and the pain lasts a lifetime. ![]() Ben could never have imagined the future he would have with his mother and older brother, Curtis, growing up in impoverished Detroit.
